State of the Youth Sector Forum

Each year, YACWA invites youth workers, advocates and young people themselves to workshop the big issues affecting our sector. This year, in light of the upheaval form COVID-19 lockdown and in the lead-up to WA’s state election, we have an opportunity to fundamentally rethink the way our systems serve young people. Building on YACWA’s recently published Recovery Framework, we’re asking you to help us envision ideas to rebuild a more equitable and prosperous WA for our state’s young people. The ideas we generate as a collective here will help shape YACWA’s pre-budget submission, our state election platform and our future advocacy for the young people and the youth sector. For those living outside of Perth or otherwise unable to attend the physical event – we’ll be hosting an online companion event on 2 October. Registrations are open now via Zoom.

Community Sector Recovery Webinar Series: Working in Partnerships; lessons learnt through COVID-19

Join a number of the community sector partners to discuss what worked well in working in partnership within the community services sector and across other sectors during the emergency response to COVID-19. This webinar will showcase some specific case studies, including the WA Peaks Forum and the response to charity and food relief. What lessons were learnt, and how do we continue to engage the spirit of cooperation into recovery and regeneration? This session will also explore how we use these lessons to plan for future emergencies, whether it be a resurgence of COVID-19, or something else in future.

'The pressure cooker environment - preventing the next pandemic'

The One Health SIG within PHAA has brought together global leaders in One Health to discuss the emergence of SARS coronavirus and association with changing climates and biodiversity. Six out of every ten known emerging infectious diseases originate in animals. Increasing trade and travel due to globalisation enable rapid worldwide spread of these diseases as we are experiencing with COVID-19. Climate change acts as both a facilitator and driver of disease emergence by disruption of wild ecosystems, evidenced by changes in distribution of pathogens and their vectors. Disease spill-over events from animals are happening with greater frequency making effective One Health frameworks urgently required to prevent the next pandemic.

This webinar is being held as a satellite event to the 2020 Australian Public Health Conference, however all PHAA members and non-members are invited to attend.

Cancer Council presents "What’s so different about cancer survivorship when you’re a young adult?”

Panel: Megan Thomas, Dr Ursula Sansom-Daly and Gabrielle Asprey

Young adult survivors, (25-40 years), continue to experience complex issues beyond the immediate treatment phase. Workplace conversations, body image issues, gaps in peer support and long-term effects from the treatment, can make it difficult to fully articulate how treatment has impacted your life. The developmental milestones that are either delayed, shadowed or challenged by cancer treatment are often not seen or understood by those around the survivor. In this webinar, we will discuss these issues and bring to light resources and strategies that can help young adult survivors to feel less isolated. We hope to normalise the conversation around struggles and successes.

Reducing drug-related harms and improving mental health among people released from incarceration: a case for continuity of care.

Presented by Dr Jesse Young, a NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow in the Justice Health Unit at The University of Melbourne specialising in psychiatric epidemiology with leading expertise in data linkage methodology

Despite an urgent call to action by the World Health Organization over a decade ago, mental illness and substance use disorders remain highly prevalent among people in prison, and this prevalence is increasing rapidly in some jurisdictions. Although improving the health of people with mental disorders who experience incarceration is increasingly recognised as a key component of public health, substantial gaps in evidence remain and hinder the capacity of community-based mental healthcare and alcohol and other drug service providers to develop targeted, evidence-informed responses to the health needs of people released from prison. Therefore, true ‘throughcare’ is at best aspirational in most jurisdictions and contact with the criminal justice system remains a public health opportunity missed. This seminar will present findings on service use patterns and health outcomes for people with mental health and substance use disorders released from prison generated from several of the largest cohort studies to link routinely collected administrative health and justice data, globally. Implications for policy and practice will be discussed.

This year's theme is "Respect Starts With You". To hear that one in five Western Australian women have reported experiencing partner violence since the age of 15 (2019 Women’s Report Card), is devastating. In an aim to reduce The 16 Days in WA to Stop Violence Against Women aims to raise awareness, increase positive actions and highlight organisations, agencies, communities and individuals working to end violence against women.
From 25 November to 10 December, individuals and communities throughout the State have an opportunity to show their support for ending violence against women, including family, domestic and sexual violence. Breaking the cycle of family and domestic violence starts with respect.
You can get involved by:

  • Hosting or participating in an event to raise awareness
  • Sharing the campaign messages on social media
  • Wearing something orange throughout the duration of the campaign
  • Talking to your children and other young people in your life about respectful relationships.

Visit www.communities.wa.gov.au/projects/16-days-in-wa/ for more information or activities you can participate in over the 16 days. Stopping violence against women is about promoting equality and respectful relationships, creating violence-free spaces and safer communities.
