On 26 July, AHPA President Dr Gemma Crawford joined a roundtable discussion in Sydney hosted by the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and Saltire Capital Partners on Advancing prevention in AustraliaThe roundtable explored actions needed to deliver a prevention system, as outlined in the National Preventive Health Strategy 2021-2030.

This event was chaired by renowned public health expert, Professor Don Nutbeam FAHMS, Executive Director of Sydney Health Partners and Professor of Public Health at The University of Sydney.

The roundtable brought together some of the country’s top experts in the sector with policymakers and industry leaders to discuss opportunities and limitations around advancing current strategies for prevention in Australia, as well as key knowledge gaps and challenges.

Specifically, the roundtable was designed to:

  • Consider the continuing validity of strategies and opportunities for improving prevention in Australia highlighted in the Strategy (the scientific basis for prevention).
  • Consider the most significant barriers to implementation of the current strategy and identify opportunities for better implementation in practice to benefit the whole community (translation into practice).
  • Identify any key gaps in our understanding of preventive strategies or their implementation, which should be addressed as a priority to inform better approaches (future research agenda).
