The use and evaluation of social media in public health campaigns

Speakers: James Kite and Dr Blythe O’Hara

James is currently Lecturer and PhD candidate within the Prevention Research Collaboration. His work with the PRC is focused on the evaluation of social marketing and mass media campaigns, with a particular interest in the use of social media within campaigns. He is also part of the Sydney School of Public Health’s Teaching and Learning Leadership Team and is heavily involved in teaching Masters of Public Health students. Additionally, he is conducting research into teaching and learning practices to help improve the learning experience for students. Before joining the University of Sydney, James worked in various NSW Government departments, predominately in research and evaluation of chronic disease prevention initiatives, including mass media campaigns.

Blythe is Senior Research Fellow at the Prevention Research Collaboration, University of Sydney, having held a number of senior roles within the public and academic sectors over the last 15 years. Blythe’s particular research interests include behaviour change (at an individual and population level), social marketing and mass media campaigns, population health, translational research (and the process of adopting evidence to public health initiatives) and pragmatic evaluations of real-world programs. She completed her PhD in 2013 on the process and impact evaluation of the NSW Get Healthy Service.
