AHPA Victoria held their first Professional Development session for 2016 on April 19th. The session focused on advocacy and special guests speakers for the night were Jane Martin from the Obesity Policy Coalition and Ben Hubbard, General Manager of Public Policy and Strategy.
Jane gave a great insight into building strategic partnerships, using research – especially balancing the p value with the PR value – and outlining a range of factors that has led her to be one of Australia’s leading advocates for tobacco control and now obesity prevention.
Ben had some honest practical advice, as a former Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister and other like positions, about how to effectively advocate to politicians, advisors and bureaucrats at all levels of government. His anecdotes provided great examples of good and bad advocacy efforts at the highest level.
There were 30 minutes of Q&A - a great masterclass for those in attendance.
