What Your Membership Contributes To

Membership of the Health Promotion Association contributes to a substantial amount of activity that has wide reaching benefits to health promotion and to the community. 

Membership of the Health Promotion Association contributed

at a national level to:

  • the National Health Promotion conferences
  • three great issues of the Health Promotion Journal of Australia
  • four e-copy issues of Health Promotion Update, the national newsletter of the Association
  • development of policies on tobacco, alcohol, firearms, skin cancer, sexuality education, asthma, mental health, abortion, worksite health promotion and diabetes
  • representation on the National Public Health Partnership Advisory Group
  • input to Government initiatives
  • establishment of a joint Taskforce on Health Promotion Workforce Development with the National Public Health Partnership
  • collaboration with the Indigenous Health Promotion Network and participation by the Network in the National Health Promotion Conference
  • international participation through the International Union of Health Promotion and Education, the World Conference on Health Promotion and Health Education, and the World Health Organisation
  • advocacy at national and international levels to further health promotion and the health of Australians

at a branch level* to:

  • professional development seminars and workshops
  • branch based newsletters and notices
  • an email list
  • student scholarships
  • health promotion careers nights
  • representation on Ministerial Advisory Council on Health Promotion
  • student of the year awards
  • discounted registration fees for national conference
  • branch membership directory
  • participation in branch based public health and/or health promotion forums
  • creation of partnerships with other professional associations

Mission

The mission of the Australian Health Promotion Association is to provide knowledge, resources and perspectives needed to improve health promotion research and practice.

Objectives

  • To provide opportunities for the professional development of members, including the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and information.
  • To provide opportunities for the exchange of knowledge in the field of health promotion through the annual national health promotion conference, and the publication of the Health Promotion Journal of Australia and other contemporary media.
  • To develop and comment upon existing and proposed health promotion policy and programs in the wider community and to advocate for contemporary directions.
  • To support members in their endeavours to increase public awareness of the concept of health.
  • To make recommendations with respect to the standards and practice of health promotion as well as the training of health promotion practitioners.
  • To represent the interests of Australian health promotion practice when liaising with other organisations.
