Health Promotion Dreaming - Shifting the Sands
23 to 26 April 2006, Alice Springs Convention Centre, Northern Territory
With the recent international conference in Bangkok and the launch of the Bangkok Charter for Health Promotion in a Globalised World (WHO, 2005) there was clear emphasis on actions, commitments and pledges required to address the determinants of health. This will require not only strong political action, broad participation and sustained advocacy but a health promotion workforce that is able to translate these social determinants into meaningful action.
I am pleased that the 16th National Health Promotion Conference in Alice Springs will take us a little further on that journey. The central theme is Health Promotion Dreaming: Shifting the Sands. This conference will concentrate on indigenous health and social determinants as a central issue for practice. A broad cross section of indigenous and non indigenous keynote speakers will reflect on various aspects of these central issues, including the successes that we have achieved through innovative approaches; what we have learned (or should have learned) from both our failures and our successes; and what we need to do to apply our most recent developments in the field through a social determinants framework to practice. Speakers will also be challenging and confronting and suggest ways that we can move forward.
