On behalf of the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA) we are pleased to invite you to the 20th National AHPA Conference to be held at the Cairns Convention Centre from 10-13 April 2011. The focus of the conference will be on the determinants of health, with a strong emphasis on the social determinants of health along with solutions to strengthen action to address them.
The report of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health demonstrated how social factors directly shape health outcomes and explain health inequities. The report stressed the need to tackle the leading causes of ill-health at their roots, going beyond encouraging individuals to change their behaviour.
This is an enormous challenge, and as Professor Tony McMichael from the Australian National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health recently stated, the big task is to promote sustainable environmental and social conditions that bring enduring and equitable health gains.
The Conference will contribute to this challenge by bringing together people from many disciplines and sectors working in health promotion, population health and related sectors. We will be welcoming a broad and diverse group of attendees: academics, policy makers, government and community representatives involved in, for example, justice, education, urban planning, human and community services as well as students from health, education, environmental and social service related fields.
