Social Determinants of Health

Social determinants of health are factors in society or in our living conditions that affect our health, for better or for worse, throughout life. Things such as education, housing, transport, employment, working conditions, enough money, clean drinking water, sanitation, and a good start to life are just some of the social determinants of health. "Throughout the world, poor people and those from socially disadvantaged groups get sicker and die sooner than people in more privileged social positions.

Much of the profound inequity in peoples' health within and between countries is socially determined. It arises from the circumstances in which people live and work. Science shows that social factors account for the bulk of the global burden of disease and of health inequalities between and within countries." - WHO http://www.who.int/entity/social_determinants/en/

Our newly established section on the Social Determinants of Health contains general information, books and reports, journal articles, national and international links, local videos and DVDs, and a Powerpoint presentation for your information.
