National and State Conferences hosted by NSW Branch

National Conference Made in the Future: a conference on leadership, capacity building, evidence and advocacy, Darling Harbour, Sydney, June 2002.
The NSW Branch was established in mid 2001 and was responsible for organising and hosting the 14th Australian Health Promotion Association Conference in June 2002 which was done very successfully at Darling Harbour in the centre of Sydney. Invited International speakers were Dr Gauden Galea, WHO The Phililppines, Prof Lawerence Green CDC, USA, and Prof Michael Marmot, Uni College London UK. Plus a host of invited Australian speakers including Prof Adrian Bauman, Prof Stephen Leeder, Dr David Legge, Prof Mark Harris, Assoc Prof Louise Rowling and others.

State Conference 'Building Bridges in the Bush' State Conference, Coffs Harbour, May 2003
There was no National Conference in 2003, instead each State and Territory organized a forum with a focus on rural health promotion. For NSW, the Health Promotion Unit at Coffs Harbour, Mid-North Coast Area Health Service, in collaboration with New England and Northern Rivers Area Health Services, and local NGOs hosted a State Conference called Building Bridges in the Bush. Those 200 plus fortunate enough to attend were treated to a fabulous venue, an interesting and informative variety of guest speakers and workshops, yummy food, exercise opportunities, and a great debate on 'Health Promotion has done buggar all to improve the Health of Australians' moderated by George Negus. The affirmative team was led by Jean Kitson and Adam Spencer led the negative team. It was good value. Made even more so by our very own health promotion stars, Adrian Bauman, Bill Bellew, Marilyn Wise and Jim Cavaye. All entertained and performed well. Other more serious and erudite speakers included Dr Pat O'Shane. Her speech on crime-poverty-health was not only informative and motivational it was inspirational in reminding us just how social and environmental factors interact to determine or undermine health.

Conference Scholarships

The NSW Branch offers periodic scholarships to a small number of members who meet the specific criteria (see application for details). The scholarships assist these members to attend the Australian Health Promotion Association's Annual Conference. The scholarships provide a fantastic opportunity for those who may not be able to attend for financial reasons. Application details are promoted via the email list and newsletter. Watch for the next EOI prior to the Australian Health Promotion Association's next Conference in Brisbane in 2008.
