NSW Home | Committee | Reports, Plans & Branch Records | Member Services & Activities Social Determinants of Health | Newsletters | Links The NSW Branch was established in 2001 with Marilyn Wise as the interim President. A major impetus for the formation of the Branch was the Australian Health Promotion Association 14th National Conference which was successfully held in Sydney in 2002. Since that time the Branch membership has steadily grown with over 100 Individual and 45 Corporate memberships in 2005. The Branch Committee is always seeking to improve on the services and information we provide to our members. To enable us to do this, we need your feedback. If you have an idea or suggestion please let us know. The Committee is also looking for members who would like to help on particular working groups but do not necessarily want to officially become a Committee representative. If you would like to become involved, we would love to hear from you. Contact the Branch President, Suzanne Gleeson sglee@email.cs.nsw.gov.au Next Branch Committee Meeting
All members are welcome to attend committee meetings, for details or directions please contact the Branch President, Suzanne Gleeson at sglee@email.cs.nsw.gov.au
Social Determinants of Health Social determinants of health are factors in society or in our living conditions that affect our health, for better or for worse, throughout life. Things such as education, housing, transport, employment, working conditions, enough money, clean drinking water, sanitation, and a good start to life are just some of the social determinants of health. "Throughout the world, poor people and those from socially disadvantaged groups get sicker and die sooner than people in more privileged social positions. Much of the profound inequity in peoples' health within and between countries is socially determined. It arises from the circumstances in which people live and work. Science shows that social factors account for the bulk of the global burden of disease and of health inequalities between and within countries." - WHO http://www3.who.int/whosis/csdh Our newly established section on the Social Determinants of Health contains general information, books and reports, journal articles, national and international links, local videos and DVDs, and a Powerpoint presentation for your information. read more here |
